Stock indexes dropped about 2 percent on Friday, weighed down by financial shares, as reports painting a mixed economic picture dented optimism fed by the economy's return to growth.

Also, the S&P materials sector <.GSPM> fell 3.3 percent, extending losses after the U.S. dollar continued to rise.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> fell 199.29 points, or 2.00 percent, to 9,763.29. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> lost 24.30 points, or 2.28 percent, to 1,041.81. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> dropped 40.61 points, or 1.94 percent, to 2,056.94.
