U.S. stocks rose for a second day in a choppy session on Thursday with technology and consumer discretionary stocks leading the way after upbeat earnings.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 8.10 points, or 0.07 percent, to end unofficially at 12,402.76. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 5.22 points, or 0.40 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,325.69. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 21.54 points, or 0.78 percent, to close unofficially at 2,782.92.
