U.S. stocks ended lower on Monday as a sharp drop in Chinese equities <.SSEC> added to concerns about the global economy's recovery.

Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> fell 47.92 points, or 0.50 percent,

to end unofficially at 9,496.28. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> slipped 8.31 points, or 0.81 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,020.62. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> lost 19.71 points, or 0.97 percent, to close unofficially at 2,009.06.

Stocks gained for the month, though. The Dow climbed 3.5 percent, the S&P 500 advanced 3.4 percent and the Nasdaq rose1.5 percent.
