Stocks cut gains on Tuesday, unable to sustain a broad rally as investors pocketed gains after data showed a slowdown in growth in the services sector.

The Nasdaq Composite <.IXIC> turned negative after having risen more than 2 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> ticked up 11.73 points, or 0.12 percent, at 9,698.21. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> rose 1.43 points, or 0.14 percent, at 1,024.01. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> shed 1.39 points, or 0.07 percent, at 2,090.40.
