Stocks extended gains on Tuesday with the Nasdaq up more than 1 percent after a reading of consumer confidence came in much higher than expected.

Bullish broker comments lift Apple Inc's shares.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 102.27 points, or 1.24 percent, to 8,379.59. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> added 10.10 points, or 1.14 percent, to 897.10. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> rose 30.21 points, or 1.79 percent, to 1,722.22.
