U.S. stocks trimmed gains on Monday after homebuilder sentiment fell in July to the lowest level in more than a year after a homebuyer tax credit expired in April.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 49.27 points, or 0.49 percent, to 10,147.17. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> added 4.89 points, or 0.46 percent, to 1,069.77. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gained 12.99 points, or 0.60 percent, to 2,192.04.
