Stocks climbed on Thursday as expectations of reassuring quarterly results from bellwethers, including Google , lifted tech shares, while JPMorgan's better-than-expected profit added to bank stabilization hopes.

Investors bet that technology earnings would show upside surprises, sending shares of Google up more than 2 percent. The Internet search giant is expected to post results after the closing bell.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 113.41 points, or 1.41 percent, to 8,143.03. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 14.90 points, or 1.75 percent, to 866.96. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> jumped 44.34 points, or 2.73 percent, to 1,671.14.
