Stocks added to modest declines on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve acknowledged a faltering pace of economic recovery and repeated its vow to hold interest rates exceptionally low for an extended period.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dipped 2.11 points, or 0.02 percent, to 10,291.41. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was off 3.45 points, or 0.31 percent, to 1,091.86. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> slipped 5.91 points, or 0.26 percent, to 2,255.89.
