Stocks pared gains on Tuesday after data showed sales of used homes unexpectedly fell in May.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dipped 5.90 points, or 0.06 percent, to 10,436.51. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> dropped 1.63 points, or 0.15 percent, to 1,111.57. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gained 4.80 points, or 0.21 percent, to 2,293.89.

Gains in technology shares limited losses on the S&P 500 and helped lift the Nasdaq.
