Stocks fell at the open on Monday as weak growth in Japan added to worries about the strength of the global economy, which have hit equity markets in recent days.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 68.64 points, or 0.67 percent, to 10,234.51. The Standard & Poor's 500 <.SPX> fell 7.93 points, or 0.73 percent, to 1,071.32. The Nasdaq Composite <.IXIC> lost 14.85 points, or 0.68 percent, to 2,158.63.
