Stocks fell at the open on Wednesday as data showed job losses in the U.S. private sector accelerated in March and on news that struggling automaker General Motors could be headed for bankruptcy.

The U.S. private sector shed 742,000 jobs in March.

Market eyes G20 meeting in London.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 115.49 points, or 1.52 percent, to 7,493.43. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> fell 13.27 points, or 1.66 percent, to 784.60. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> lost 28.00 points, or 1.83 percent, to 1,500.59.
