U.S. stocks jumped on Tuesday as investors went on a buying binge and pushed the S&P 500 above its 200-day moving average for the first time in a month, suggesting the recent downtrend may be nearing an end.

* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 213.88 points, or 2.10 percent, to end unofficially at 10,404.77. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> climbed 25.60 points, or 2.35 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,115.23. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> jumped 61.92 points, or 2.76 percent, to close unofficially at 2,305.88.
