Stocks extended losses late in the session on Monday, pushing the Dow and S&P 500 down more than 1 percent each, as fresh worries about Europe's banking system weighed on sentiment.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 134.90 points, or 1.32 percent, at 10,058.49. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 14.09 points, or 1.30 percent, at 1,073.60. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 16.05 points, or 0.72 percent, at 2,212.99.
