At this point last season, Cam Newton was riding just as high as the NFL’s latest rookie sensation Robert Griffin III.

Griffin will have the chance to put any comparison’s between the two young quarterbacks to rest Sunday as the Washington Redskins host the Carolina Panthers at FedEx Field.

Newton and the 1-6 Panthers have struggled mightily throughout his sophomore season, and are riding a bumpy five-game losing streak into Sunday’s matchup.

During that streak he’s thrown six interceptions compared to three touchdowns, and has just three rushing scores this season, when he set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback last season.

Carolina’s defense didn’t fare much better in their 23-22 loss to the Chicago last week, surrendering a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Griffin and the Redskins have the chance to head into their bye week with a win over the reeling Panthers, after two straight losses to the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pittsburgh dominated Washington for a 27-12 win last week, behind 140 rushing yards against the Redskins 10th ranked rush defense.

Washington’s receivers recorded 10 drops throughout the game, and Griffin went 16-for-34 for 177 yards, and rushed for eight yards.

Newton could revitalize his season when facing the Redskins last place pass defense, which gives up 314.3 yards per game.

The game begins at 1 p.m. EDT and will be shown by FOX, or watch a live stream online by purchasing NFL Sunday Ticket Max.
