Wayne Rooney completed a sensational first half for Manchester United against Tottenham at Old Trafford with a fine solo effort to put his team 3-0 to the good. In a match that could prove crucial to both team’s ambitions of making it into the Premier League’s top four, United had gone 2-0 in front in the first 19 minutes through Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick.

And 34 minutes in, Rooney was given the chance to run at a crumbling Spurs defense by an errant pass from Nabil Bentaleb. The United captain seized upon the opportunity, taking the ball past Eric Dier on the edge of the Tottenham area before beating goalkeeper Hugo Lloris with a low shot. The England international then celebrated his effort by mocking a video picked up by a British tabloid over the weekend allegedly showing him being knocked out in a kitchen boxing bout.

The goal was Rooney’s fifth in his last six appearances for his club and surely provides Manchester United with an unassailable lead. United went into the game sitting in fourth place in the Premier Leagee, just three points above sixth-place Tottenham. But it was one-way traffic in the first half as United produced one of their best spells of play since Louis van Gaal took charge last summer.
