A new documentary about Whitney Houston's life talks about the late singer's bisexuality and her long-rumored secret romance with her best friend and assistant Robyn Crawford. The documentary, “Whitney: Can I Be Me,” debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival Wednesday night.

Interviews conducted with Houston's family members and friends reveal the singer's relationship with Crawford was more than platonic. The documentary also shows never-before-seen footage taken throughout Houston's tumultuous life.

“I don’t think she was gay, I think she was bisexual,” Houston’s longtime friend and stylist Ellin Lavar says in the film. “Robyn provided a safe place for her…in that Whitney found safety and solace.”

The film also hints at Houston being in the middle of a contentious relationship between her then-husband Bobby Brown and Crawford, according to People magazine. The late "I Will Always Love You" singer first met Crawford as a teenager in East Orange, New Jersey before marrying Brown in 1992.

“Robyn and Whitney were like twins,” Houston's security personnel Kevin Ammons said in the movie. “They were inseparable. They had a bond and Bobby Brown could never remove Robyn. He wanted to be the man in the relationship.”

Houston's former bodyguard David Roberts revealed that Brown and Crawford would “battle for her affections,” and that the singer had a "downfall" when Crawford left after the 1999 “My Love Is Your Love” world tour.

"Bobby and Robyn had some physical altercations and there were times where he wasn’t always the winner. But then Whitney would always come and pour oil over troubled waters,” Roberts said.

This is not the first time people close to Houston have talked about her rumored relationship with Crawford. In 2016, Brown confirmed in his memoir "Every Little Step: My Story" that he knew Houston was bisexual.

"I know,” Brown told Entertainment Tonight when asked about Whitney's secret relationship. “We were married for 14 years. There are some things we talked about that were personal to us.

"I really feel that if Robyn was accepted into Whitney's life, Whitney would still be alive today," he said at the time. "She didn't have close friends with her anymore."

Houston died on Feb. 11, 2012 at the age of 48 after being found unconscious, submerged in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills hotel room. The toxicology report revealed the legendary singer had drugs in her system when she died.

Her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown died under similar circumstances on July 26, 2015, after being in an unresponsive state for six months. The 22-year-old was put in a medically induced coma after being found at her Atlanta home facedown in a bathtub on Jan. 31, 2015.
