Charles County Sheriff’s Deputy Alexander C. Sullivan has been charged with possession of child pornography. Detectives in Maryland said they received tips about a phone number linked to the pornography from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said that detectives recognized Sullivan’s name and phone number as the one that uploaded child pornography, and arrested him Monday.

Forensic investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to federal prosecutors. However, initial probe found that Sullivan’s phone had more than 200 images and five videos containing child pornography.

“We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners as the investigation moves forward,” Sheriff Troy Berry reportedly said.

The 37-year-old officer of King George, Virginia, has been suspended without pay in accordance with agency policy. If convicted, Sullivan could face a maximum of 10 years in prison.

According to local reports, the officer was in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland, Tuesday afternoon, where he was released to home detention with electronic monitoring.

State's Attorney Anthony Covington commended the sheriff's office for their quick action.

“The sheriff's office, as soon as they got this information, they acted immediately,” he said. “They did a great job investigating, and they got it done quickly."
