Eddie Murphy who won a nomination for the Best Supporting Actor for his role in Dreamgirls at the 2007 Oscars, is on to something big. If rumors are to be believed, the new Oscar producer Brett Ratner will recommend Eddie Murphy for hosting the most prestigious film awards, to Academy President Tom Sherak in a meeting scheduled this Tuesday.

According a Deadline report, a lot of big names have approached the other 84th Academy Awards producer Don Mischer saying they are interested in hosting, but Don is reportedly fielding those calls.

However, Ratner has been quite keen on having Eddie and Eddie apparently is showing interest.

Nikki Finke of Deadline spoke to an insider who said, Nobody knows movies better or is a bigger cinephile than Eddie. Not Brett. Not even Quentin Tarantino. Eddie can quote scenes from every single movie word for word. He can bring all that experience to hosting. Plus he has Saturday Night Live experience before a live crowd. And worldwide the biggest crossover comedians are Will Smith and Eddie Murphy.

An Oscar-hosting gig would be a real coup for Murphy's dormant career as his upcoming crime comedy film Tower Heist directed by Brett Ratner, is opening on Nov. 4.

Billy Crystal, who has showed interest in hosting again, might get a chance to be on the show in some marquee way, reports Deadline.
