The trailer for the upcoming "The incredible Burt Wonderstone," starring Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, and Jim Carrey, debuted on Friday. The film centers on a group of struggling magicians (Carell and Buscemi) who face off against a gimmicky industry icon (Carrey). Alan Arkin, Olivia Wilde and James Gandolfini also have roles in the comedy

Among the three leads, it's Carrey who desperately needs a comeback.

In the 90's and early 2000's, Carrey appeared in well-known hits like "Dumb and Dumber," "Ace Ventura," and "Bruce Almighty." The actor also won acclaim for his dramatic turns in "The Truman Show" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."

In 2008 he starred in two successful films, "Yes Man" and "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!"

However, his last major hit was the 2009 remake of "A Christmas Carol." In recent years, he has starred in a string of flops, including "I Love You Phillip Morris" and "Mr. Popper's Penguins."

So will "The incredible Burt Wonderstone" put the once bankable star back on the map? Unfortunately, the film's trailer has had mixed responses.

As the name suggests, 'The Incredible Burt Wonderstone' looks, well, incredible," E! online's Brandi Fowler said.

"I have a feeling 2013 is going to be a very good year for Jim Carrey fans," Drew McWeeny of Hit Fix said. "I may not love everything Carrey's ever done, but I remain convinced that he is one of the wildest, most exciting talents working in film right now."

But not everyone is so optimistic.

"From initial views of the trailer, it looks pretty terrible," concluded Contact Music. "We might be eating our words come March 15th 2013, and we'll happily do so, but it looks unlikely."

"I was really hopeful 'The Incredible Burt Wonderstone' would revitalize the comedic magic both Steve Carell and Jim Carrey once possessed," said Get the Picture. "Unfortunately, the promising set photos we saw earlier from this new comedy were nothing more than an illusion. Don't believe me? Check out the first trailer below. It makes 'The Watch' look like a four star laugh riot in comparison. "

Despite the trailer's so-so reaction, it remains to be seen whether the film will lure filmgoers. Even if the film is panned by critics, it still has a chance of holding its own at the box office. "Me, Myself & Irene" and "Fun With Dick and Jane," earning largely negative reviews but proved to be hits.

'The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" opens on March 15.
