World Trade Center Construction Featured in 2 Minute Time-Lapse Video, Will It Surpass The Empire State Building As The Tallest?

One World Trade Center, currently under construction in Lower Manhattan at the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, could end up being the tallest building in New York City, surpassing the Empire State Building as soon as next week. In honor of the construction process, EarthCam, an international webcam technology company, released a two minute-long time-lapse of the progression of the tower.

According to Reuters, officials said on Tuesday the construction of One World Trade Center will stand at 1,776 feet tall, a few hundred feet higher than the Empire State, which stands at 1,250 feet.

Weather permitting, we expect that we could exceed the height of the Empire State Building on Monday, Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye said, Reuters reported..

The Empire State Building was built in 1931 and was the tallest building until the original World Trade Center towers were erected in 1972. After the 9/11 attacks, the Empire State regained its title of New York City's tallest building.

Foye said One World Trade Center, a project which began six years ago initially called the Freedom Tower, will be completed in late 2013 or 2014 and also house 4 World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial Plaza.

One World Trade Center will be higher than the original twin towers, which were knocked down in 2001 during a terrorist attack on Sept. 11, where more than 3,000 people were killed.
