The head of the World Trade Organization said on Wednesday that aid for trade is a key piece necessary for trade development and growth to occur.

WTO Director-general Pascal Lamy was speaking at the 53rd session of the UNCTAD Trade and Development board meeting. Lamy stressed that there is no acceptable alternative to the successful conclusion of the Round but only aiding trade in poorer countries can trade develop.

It is clear that both trade opening and Aid for Trade must fall on fertile ground to flower and that effective institutions and governance are essential to this end, Lamy said in his speech.

Lamy maintains that his number one objective is to conclude the postponed Doha Trade talks, however, he also emphasized the need for trade, development and growth to be established together in order for it to fit as a coherent whole.
