Rumors that Britney Spears would be on the third season of “The X Factor” in 2013 have not been confirmed by Fox, the network says.

According to an article in The Sun tabloid in Britain, Spears relayed that she would be a judge on the next season while speaking to reporters at a party for “The X Factor's” top 12 U.S. contestants on Monday.

“Yes, I will definitely [return],” she responded when asked.

The judges on the 2012 “X Factor” panel are Spears, Demi Lovato, L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell.

It’s the first year for Spears and Lovato, but Reid and Cowell debuted on the U.S. edition of the show in 2011.

A Fox insider says, "The only judge who's guaranteed to return right now is Simon. The network doesn't decide which of the other judges are coming back until the end of the year, when the ratings for the show's entire season can be evaluated."

It seems Spears may have jumped the gun on this one because ever since she joined the show, ratings have hit an all-time low.

In 2011, "The X Factor" was averaging nearly 12 million viewers per episode, but since Spears has joined the show this year, it is averaging 9 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research.

That’s quite a drop from the previous years.

Additionally, the show is losing viewers in the 18-49 year-old demographic, which is the most coveted viewership for advertisers.

According to the Examiner, Spear's $15 million salary has been money wasted since she failed to boost ratings for the show, the main reason she was hired.

It would seem like a poor business choice to keep her around for another season considering her demanding salary and low ratings.
