Two men accused of murdering children attempted to escape from the Outagamie County jail in Wisconsin on Sunday (June 7) night.

On Wednesday, the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office, in an official statement, said the two inmates, identified as Demetrius Williams and Matthew Beyer, attempted to escape from the prison.

According to the officials, Williams, who was jailed in early March, was charged with first-degree intentional homicide of 3-year-old Zyana Corbin and two counts of attempted homicide against her pregnant mother with one of those counts having an added domestic abuse modifier.

Williams reportedly hid in the cell block common area and waited for a corrections officer to enter to do an inmate check. When the officer entered, Williams allegedly grabbed hold of the officer’s wrists and threatened him with an improvised weapon. Details about the weapon were not revealed.

He then attempted to force the officer to release Beyer from his cell.

Beyer was arrested on June 5 and was charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide for brutally killing his two children. During the February 17 incident, 5-year-old William Beyer and 3-year-old Danielle Beyer were found dead in the bedroom of their home in Kaukauna, Wisconsin.

According to local reports, officers quickly got hold of the situation and secured the inmates back in their cells without any further incidents. Deputies said they did not have to use any force and no other officers or inmates were injured during the incident.

The inmates weren't able to leave their immediate cell block area, and even if they managed to, there were several other strict security layers that would've prevented their escape plan, officials said.

Both Beyer and Williams will face additional charges of attempted escape and taking hostage.

In a similar incident, an inmate from the Cook County Jail in Chicago escaped wearing a face mask after exchanging his identity with a fellow inmate, who was about to be discharged by allegedly promising to pay him a sum of $1,000.
