“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” released a special treat for fans. The first 17 minutes of the Season 5 premiere are now available to watch, and that footage reveals the identity of one of the new aliens.

The sneak-peek video, which was also shown at New York Comic Con, shows the team being attacked by giant roach-like aliens. They’re called Vrellnexians, and “Thor” fans might recognize them. They first appeared with the Asgardian in a 1973 comic book.

Fans don’t get much info about the insectoids in the first 17-minutes. The team is more concerned with surviving right now. Studying their enemies will surely be a step they take later. Luckily, we know a bit about the aliens from the comics.

According to Marvel, they’re from the planet Vrellnex, and they have a queen. They’re of a hive mind, so that queen is making their choices for them. Why exactly she has sent them to infiltrate this space station is unclear.

“Vrellnexians have a total commitment to the goals of their race, virtually no concept of individuality,” Marvel warns. “[They are] ruthless in the pursuit of their goals.”

It’s also worth noting that the comics show them trading with other races. Not only are they trading commercial goods, but they’re also involved in the trafficking of slaves.

Of course, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 5 could potentially change some of the comic book details. In their short introduction it’s clear that the ABC drama is putting their own twist on the aliens. They’re called Roaches for short, and they “can surf gravity storms so they’ve been able to breach a few years back,” Virgil, the greeter on the space station, explains.

Watch their appearance in the sneak-peek video below:

The Vrellnexians aren’t the only aliens the team will be dealing with. The beginning of the video also shows a man shedding his human skin to get in the shower. He’s the one responsible for sending the team to space.

As previously reported, the Kree will also be making an appearance. The blue aliens will be one of the few recognizable aspects of the new season. Unlike previous arcs, this is one story where the fans will be just as confused as Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team. Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb explained that audiences won’t be able to look to the comics for too many clues.

“In previous seasons, the audience knows what is going on. … This year, which is something that we’ve never done before is, ‘Boom! They’re in space.’ They don’t know where they are and the mystery of what is going to happen, the audience is going along with them on that,” Loeb told International Business Times at New York Comic Con. “They learn, you learn. It’s one of those things where they’re not catching up. You’re actually with our agents on this adventure.”

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 5 premieres Friday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC. The episode will be two-hours long.
