  • Jota and Firmino scored for the Reds at Emirates Stadium
  • Liverpool will next play in the FA Cup on Sunday

Andy Robertson hailed Arsenal duo of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka after Liverpool secured a 2-0 win at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

Second-half goals from Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino helped the Reds defeat Arsenal. Liverpool are now just a point behind leaders Manchester City in the 2021-22 Premier League table.

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal were neck to neck with Liverpool for much of the first half and had a big chance to go 1-0 up after the break as Thiago Alcantara gave the ball away in a dangerous position, but goalkeeper Alisson Becker denied Martin Odegaard from close-range.

Robertson, who set up Firmino's goal, was delighted with Liverpool's second-half performance. He said the Reds did well to keep Arsenal at bay, especially as Martinelli and Saka were dangerous throughout.

When reporters asked him about his contribution to Firmino's goal, Robertson replied, "Yeah, of course, it's always good to contribute and assist goals. I got my head up and saw Bobby run ahead. It was a really tough game. I'm so happy with the clean sheet and obviously to assist Bobby. Bobby deserves his goal; I thought he was outstanding when he came on. Most importantly, a huge three points for us."

It was Robertson's 10th assist in the Premier League this season. Trent Alexander-Arnold (11), Mohamed Salah (10) and Robertson (10) have all made 10 or more assists in the league in the underway campaign – the first time a team has had three players do so since 2019-20. The same three men did it for Liverpool in the 2019-20 season as well, according to Opta Joe.

"I think it was a wee bit more [of a] defensive performance tonight, me and Trent. Martinelli and Saka are really hard work – tricky wingers, always wanting the ball in behind, always looking to take you on one-v-one. I thought Trent was outstanding against Martinelli. It’s never easy against Saka so I was happy to keep him quiet in this game," the Scot left-back added in the same interview.

Liverpool have won nine consecutive games and overall, they have been unbeaten in 18 games in the Premier League this season.

Jurgen Klopp's side will next play Nottingham Forest in the quarter-final of the FA Cup on Sunday before going into a 12-day break. Their next league fixture is against Watford on April 2 at Anfield.
