Chris Liddell has been hired by General Motors to serve as its vice chairman and chief financial officer.

The former Microsoft CFO, 51, said in late November he was looking at a number of opportunities that would expand his career beyond being a CFO.

He will start at GM in the new year, the company said completing his stay with Microsoft on December 31.

In addition to his financial and accounting responsibilities at GM, Liddell will also take on other duties.

“We’re also looking to his experience and insights in corporate strategy as a member of the senior leadership team in helping our restructuring efforts,” said Ed Whitacre, GM chairman and chief executive officer. He said Liddell’s depth and experience were unmatched it their search for a financial leader.

Liddell and his finance team were commended by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for accomplishing “a great deal” for during his four and a half year tenure at the company.
