Ezekiel Elliott's new contract is the highest in the NFL for a running back, boosting his net worth. Is he the best in his position or will his team regret giving him a huge contract?

Elliott recently agreed to a contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys worth $90 million for six years. This makes him the highest paid running back ever. Todd Gurley of the Los Angeles Rams previously owned that distinction with his $60 million, 4-year deal.

If the two running back superstars are compared based on performance, Zeke enjoys a slight advantage over Gurley. Per Fantasypros, Elliot is leading in yards, attempts, touchdowns, receptions, targets, yards, snaps and snaps per game, among others. This could be the reason why the Cowboys are willing to open the treasure chest to keep him.

This season, the star of the Dallas Cowboys has a lot to prove for him to be the face of the franchise. So far, he only registered 919 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns. Last year, he totaled 1,434 in rushing yards while in 2016, he recorded a league-leading 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns, Pop Culture reports.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believe Zeke will be more determined as the season progress. "Not to imply that they have not been motivated...I think you can expect to see Zeke a lot tomorrow, hopefully coming in this endzone, maybe in those red kettles two or three times," he added.

Aside from his hefty contract, Elliott is a marketing force on and off the field. His jersey during his rookie year topped sales lists. It also helped that he built a name for himself via impressive performances during his college days. Zeke recorded 43 touchdowns and 3,961 rushing yards for Ohio State. In his sophomore year, he already had 58 passes and three touchdowns, Mirror reported.

However, not everyone is impressed with the running back. Critics claim Dallas is better off without him and that they can get key players in return. The Cowboys, on the other hand, has set their minds their running back will be an integral part of the team’s future. The Cowboys sit atop the NFC East Conference standings with 6-6 win-loss record. Ezekiel is a playoff performer and wherever he goes, his team goes.

Aside from his record breaking deal, Elliott gets money from his endorsement deals which include Nke and Twin Peaks restaurant. He is known for tucking his jersey into his shoulders pads, to flaunt his abs.
