KEY POINTS

  • Father Time seems to have finally caught up to Manny Pacquiao
  • Ugas gave a masterful show en route to his unanimous decision victory over Pacquiao
  • Pacquiao will make his decision whether to run for president of the Philippines next month

Manny Pacquiao and Yordenis Ugas met in the middle of the ring last August 21 live on FOX PPV for the American audience and Upstream PH in the Philippines.

Ugas had the best fight of his life against the living legend as he outpointed Pacquiao for the unanimous decision victory and a successful defense of his WBA welterweight title.

The fight went about as expected as most people did, and here are some takeaways from the event.

Father Time Finally Caught Up To Pacquiao

The turning-43-year-old eight-division champion faced an uphill battle against Ugas for most of the fight as Pacquiao struggled to break through his guard.

There were times in the fight when Pacquiao was getting tagged by shots that he rarely got hit by in the past, and his legs appeared to be shot in the later rounds.

Pacquiao threw decent power shots that had Ugas reeling, but those opportunities were few and far between.

Pacquiao’s performance is a reminder to everyone that Father Time comes for all and it will remain undefeated.

Ugas Deserves Respect

Errol Spence Jr. was a late scratch from his fight with Pacquiao due to a torn retina, and the Cuban was promoted to the main event.

Many thought that the living legend will dispose of him very quickly due to him not being a household name.

Ugas did the complete opposite of that.

From the opening bell, Ugas showed that he belonged in the main event picture. He executed his game plan, predicated on slowing Pacquiao down with body shots and counter punches, to perfection en route to the victory.

The WBA welterweight champion deserves to be given a ton of respect after this performance.

Errol Spence Could Have Taken This Version Of Pacquiao

Spence’s eye injury kept him out of the originally billed super fight with Pacquiao, and many have since claimed that he was dodging Pacquiao.

This is just a disrespectful and lazy take against the WBC and IBF welterweight champion.

If Spence had not suffered the injury, it is well within reason to believe that he could get a knockout victory against this version of the Filipino legend.

But that is just how the world of boxing and fighting works, unlucky breaks can catch you at the worst times.

What’s Next For Ugas And Pacquiao

Ugas’ decisive victory over Pacquiao gives him a bit of an option on who he can face next. He can face Spence for a title unification bout.

He has other, big-money options in the form of Terence Crawford, a rematch with Shawn Porter to retake the questionable loss he suffered against him in 2019, and a bout against Keith Thurman.

On the other hand, Pacquiao’s future is a little less certain as he mentioned after the fight that he will make a final announcement next month whether he runs for president of the Philippines.

Should it happen, then the world witnessed the final fight in the illustrious near 30-year career of the only eight-division world champion last weekend at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
