  • Jones and his wife tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated

A fully vaccinated man almost ended up in an induced coma after contracting COVID-19. Aeron Maldwyn Jones says he was just a few days away from getting the booster shot when he tested positive.

Jones, a councilor from Caernarfon in Wales, the U.K., said he decided to get tested after experiencing difficulty breathing two weeks ago. The results came positive for Jones and his wife. Both had received two COVID-19 vaccine doses, reported North Wales Live.

"I had been home for five days self-isolating after testing positive and I was just getting worse every day and on Sunday I just couldn't breathe. I was upstairs, fighting for breath. My wife had to call an ambulance and I was taken to hospital," said Jones as he narrated his 11-day ordeal battling the virus.

He added that his condition was so grim that he "couldn't put a sentence together." "I was on oxygen and steroids," he said.

Doctors who checked him informed the family that Jones would have to be placed in a medically induced coma. The family prepared for the worst, but that night the oxygen and steroids started having a positive effect. "I stayed on the ward instead of going to the intensive care unit," he added.

Though Jones is back from the hospital, he still feels the "effects of COVID."

"I've been coping well since coming out. At least I can breathe. But I get out of breath very easily and I'm still coughing. I spend a lot of time sitting down and even walking to the kitchen makes me breathless. But I'm alive. I'm breathing, that's what's important," he added.

Jones said those who are fighting COVID should be cautious. "If you're fighting COVID at home and you feel like you can't cope you don't want to leave it too late and seek help. Calling an ambulance and going to the hospital is what stood me in good stead," he added.

Another man, who was scheduled to receive a booster shot in early November, died of COVID-19 in Wales last month. He too was fully vaccinated against the virus. Robert Kearle died on Oct. 29 after battling COVID-19 for a week. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 after he collapsed at his home on the night of Oct. 10. Though doctors sent him home the next day, he had to be readmitted after his condition worsened. He was placed on a ventilator but he never came off.
