With South Korea now having the second-largest COVID-19 cases in the world and with new cases sprouting every day, Blizzard has decided to cancel its “Overwatch League” matches in Seoul.

The matches, which were scheduled in the country between February 29th and March 22nd, was put on halt over the growing fear of the fatal flu-like epidemic that has been plaguing Asia. Blizzard said that their decision to cancel the games was to “protect the health and safety of our players, fans and staff.”

Blizzard also axed their OWL matches in China over the same reasons and has moved to Korea as their alternative venue. Had there been no cancellation, games were supposed to be hosted by the Seoul Dynasty at the Dongaeun Design Plaza on March 7th and 8th.

“Overwatch” esports Vice President of business operations and product strategy John Spector told The Verge earlier this month that their decision to cancel their China leg was difficult since fans and player were excited to play in the country.

“But we never had a single discussion where player safety didn't come first,” Spector said.

The COVID-19 scare also saw the suspension of the Chinese “League of Legends” Pro League merely a week into its 2020 season. As a result, officials are planning to host an online practice competition starting February 26th.

“League of Legends” Korea is still up and running, but they are doing so without any spectators. At the same time, the King Pro League, a Chinese body for “Arena of Valor” will be played online and not in arenas, said The Verge.
