Hallmark Store Closings: Which Locations Are Closing Their Doors?

Hallmark is the latest retailer to shut down stores with at least 16 locations set to close their doors. The news of the store closures come as the greeting card retailer eliminated hundreds of jobs this month as it turned its attention toward digital sales efforts.

Hallmark has seen sales of greeting cards continue to decline, which Rich Schauer, a Forest Park, Illinois Hallmark store owner that is closing his store, told the Forest Park Review was because of social media.

“It's just not a viable business any longer. People used to buy and send cards all the time. It's all online now. Everyone celebrates their birthdays on social media,” he said.

A company spokeswoman told The Wall Street Journal that Hallmark is looking to reshape its operations so it can cut costs and drive more sales online. Hallmark thinks part of the answer falls with stores located in hospitals and hardware stores over its traditional mall locations, the Kansas City Business Journal reported.

Greeting card sales have reportedly dropped by almost 13% over the last five years, with sales in 2019 of $4.5 billion. Another greeting card retailer, Papyrus, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier in January, closing all its stores in the process.
