If the Internet meme “forever alone” was ever made into a movie, “Her” would probably be the result. The first trailer for this upcoming Spike Jonze film was released Wednesday, featuring Joaquin Phoenix (“The Master”) as Theodore Twombly, a recently divorced man who falls in love with his Siri-like virtual personal assistant, Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johansson (“The Avengers”).

The trailer opens to an “artificially intelligent” operating system asking Theodore several behavioral questions such as “Are you social or anti-social?” and “How would you describe your relationship with your mother?”

Before Theodore can even answer the second question, the operating system interrupts him and a female voice greets him, callin herself Samantha (Scarlett Johansson). The artificially intelligent Samantha is heard throughout the trailer adding her wit and charm while interacting with Theodore. Samantha learns more about Theodore and begins to ask him more questions about his personal life, asking him if he would start dating again, referring to his emails she read through.

Theodore begins to grow more attached to Samantha, telling her more intimate things and even admitting his love for her, with Samantha responding in kind.

Spike Jonze (“Where the Wild Things Are”) makes his solo screenwriting debut and directs this science-fiction romance film, also featuring Amy Adams (“The Muppets”) and Rooney Mara (“The Social Network”).

“Her” is slated to premiere in limited release in theaters this fall on Nov. 20.
