For many 2022 Super Bowl viewers, the action on the field isn’t the main reason to watch the season’s biggest NFL game. Super Bowl commercials drive much of the viewership, a fact that has increased ad prices for the contest each year.

A Super Bowl LVI commercial costs up to $7 million for a 30-second ad, NBCUniversal said in a press release. NBC, which will broadcast Sunday's game between the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals, sold out every in-game spot across NBC, Telemundo and all digital platforms 10 days before the contest.

“The NFL has never been stronger and has led us to new records this year. From Sunday Night Football to Football Night in America and through the nail-biting Playoffs, we’ve seen an increased appetite for fans to watch the NFL across all our platforms,” Mark Marshall, President of Advertising & Partnerships for NBCUniversal, said in a statement.

“This multiplatform consumption has attracted even more advertisers who have the desire for the immediate scaled reach of sports. And with the power of our One Platform, we’re able to utilize these major moments to maximize viewership and drive business impact for our advertising partners.”

Some 30-second commercials are estimated to have cost $6.5 million, according to The Athletic, which would still make for a record. Ads for last year’s Super Bowl cost an estimated $5.5 million, just south of the $5.6 million price tag for a 2020 Super Bowl commercial.

The cost for an ad during the 2021 Super dipped from the previous year as a number of major corporations announced that they wouldn’t be paying millions of dollars for a commercial during the pandemic. According to NBC, the 2022 Super Bowl will feature more than 30 new advertisers that weren’t part of last year’s event.

A Super Bowl commercial first cost $1 million in 1995. The cost of an ad during the inaugural Super Bowl in 1967 was $42,500.
