The heartwarming video of a herd of elephants reuniting with the caretaker after almost 14 months has gone viral on social media.

The footage was reportedly taken at the Elephant Nature Park sanctuary in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. The sanctuary, operated by the couple Lek Saengduean Chailert and Darrick Thomson, serves as a rehabilitation center for rescued animals, including elephants, cats and dogs, News 18 reported.

The video, captioned "Elephants reunite with the caretaker," was shared on Twitter by Buitengebieden, a user from the Netherlands. It has fetched more than 3.7 million views and has been shared 25,000 times since it was posted Friday.

The footage shows Thomson standing in a shallow pool of water while calling out to the herd of elephants. The animals could be seen running toward Thomson in excitement. As they reach close to their caretaker, the elephants embrace him and caress him with their trunks.

The video has left internet users amazed. Many viewers asked Buitengebieden for details regarding the sanctuary and the operators.

"This is my friend Derek Thompson. He left his career as a Toronto firefighter to devote his life to caring for elephants. This is on the sanctuary in Thailand he and his wife Lek started," a viewer commented.

"This melts my heart. Those elephants love him and are thrilled to see him again. Incredibly sweet. Just listen to the sounds they are making. Sounds of joy," another said.

Some Twitter users shared their experience working at the sanctuary.

"I volunteered at that sanctuary almost 20 years ago now. It is a magical place. Lek does awesome work for the elephants and the refugees in Thailand," one person wrote.

Many viewers also appreciated the efforts taken by the couple in providing a safe environment for the animals and for rehabilitating them.

"This is a man living his very best life," another user said about Thomson.
