International Holocaust Remembrance Day is annually celebrated on Jan. 27 to commemorate the victims of the World War II genocide.

The United Nations General Assembly designated the day as the International Holocaust Rememberance day on Nov. 1, 2005. The day marks the end of the Nazi regime and the holocaust, which claimed the lives of six million Jews along with 11 million others.

Here are some quotes to commemorate the day, courtesy Good Reads -

  • "Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart." - Anne Frank
  • "Monsters exist, but they are too few in number to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are the common men, the functionaries ready to believe and to act without asking questions." - Primo Levi
  • "For the dead and the living, we must bear witness." - Elie Wiesel
  • "I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." - Elie Wiesel
  • "If we bear all this suffering and if there are still Jews left, when it is over, then Jews, instead of being doomed, will be held up as an example." - Anne Frank
  • "First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me." - Martin Niemöller
  • "For evil to flourish, it only requires good men to do nothing." - Simon Wiesenthal
  • "For your benefit, learn from our tragedy. It is not a written law that the next victims must be Jews. It can also be other people. We saw it begin in Germany with Jews, but people from more than twenty other nations were also murdered." - Simon Wiesenthal
  • "The Holocaust manifested the veneer of civilization so thin and fragile that repetition was possible." - Sam Kaltman
  • "Thou shalt not be a victim, thou shalt not be a perpetrator, but, above all, thou shalt not be a bystander." - Yehuda Bauer
