International Mountain Day is marked annually on Dec. 11 to highlight the influence of mountains on our lives, be it directly or indirectly. This day was first celebrated in the year 2003.

The theme of this year's International Mountain Day is "Sustainable Mountain Tourism," according to the United Nations. It is meant to highlight the importance of mountain tourism, as these geographical features attract 15 to 20 percent of global tourism annually.
