International No Diet Day is celebrated annually on May 6 to promote body positivity, fat acceptance and body shape diversity.

The day was first started by Mary Evans in the United Kingdom in 1992. It soon gained popularity in countries like United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Israel, Denmark, Sweden and Brazil.

Evans, who went through anorexia herself, started the No Diet Day to help men and women around the world appreciate their own bodies better. She also started an organization called Diet Breakers to bring attention to the cause.

The day aims to educate people about the need to diet responsibly and effectively for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It also creates awareness among people about the actual inefficacy of commercial diets and the diet industry.

“Those who complete weight loss programs lose approximately 10 percent of their body weight only to regain two-thirds within a year and almost all of it within five years,” according to the US Institute of Medicine.

On this day, people are encouraged to take a one-day break from their diets and eat what they feel like without worrying about their body shape or weight. It is a day to embrace body diversity and to challenge the idea of “right body shape.”

There are different ways in which you can participate in No Diet Day. The most important step is a decision to end weight discrimination, fatphobia and size discrimination. You can also use this day to create awareness among people about several eating disorders.
