Jeep officially released the newest addition to its EV collection on Wednesday. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid is considered a bold move toward fuel-efficient vehicles.

“The Jeep Grand Cherokee is our global flagship and will be leading the Jeep brand into a new era of premium refinement, innovative technology, advanced 4x4 capability, and electrification," said Christian Meunier, Jeep brand chief executive officer in the press release. “With a perfect balance of on-road dynamics, 4x4 capability, and 4xe performance, the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most technologically advanced, luxurious, and 4x4-capable Grand Cherokee ever.”

The new EV will not be fully electrical but will be able to power 25 miles of all-electric range, which will then switch to a four-cylinder turbocharged engine that is expected to get 57 miles per gallon. The Ohio-based automaker has committed to releasing “zero-emission” and plug-in hybrid variant versions of all its vehicles by 2025.

The new Grand Cherokee's plug-in hybrid system includes two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, a 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine, and an eight-speed automatic transmission, according to its official website. The 4xe system delivers 375 horsepower and can handle 6,000 pounds of maximum towing. It will have a total driving range of about 440 miles, according to the press release.

There are three different driving modes to choose from. Hybrid blends the electric motor and gas engine. Electric operates on zero-emission electric power until the battery runs out. “eSave” will only run the engine to save the electric battery.

Jeep also introduced an EV hybrid plug-in version of the Jeep Wrangler earlier this year, the “Jeep Wrangler 4xe.”

The new EV hybrid Jeep Grand Cherokee and its off-roading version the “Trailhawk” will be available this winter.
