KEY POINTS

  • Kylian Mbappe has been in great form this year
  • He has already netted 10 goals for PSG in the underway season
  • Mbappe has netted 28 goals for France since his debut in March 2017

Kylian Mbappe has taken a dig at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), saying he plays with "more freedom" with the France national team than at club level.

Mbappe's comments came after he scored in France's 2-0 win over Austria in Nations League on Thursday. During the game, Mbappe had many one-on-one link-ups with Olivier Giroud, which showed both the players were in a fine sync. The AC Milan forward assisted Mbappe's goal and even netted the other goal for France.

"I play differently [with France]. I am asked other things here compared to with my club. I have a lot more freedom here. The coach knows that there is a number 9 like Oliv' who occupies the defences and I can walk around and go into space. In Paris, it's different, there isn't that. I am asked to do the pivot, it is different," Mbappe was quoted by L'Equipe, as saying in an interview, according to Goal.com.

The 35-year-old Giroud on Thursday became the oldest goal scorer in the history of France soccer, according to BBC Sport.

Since making his international debut in March 2017, Mbappe has netted 28 goals for France and only Antoine Griezmann has done so well for the World Cup champions over the period. The Atletico Madrid forward has also netted 28 goals, including in France's 3-1 win over Luxembourg, which was also Mbappe's international debut.

Mbappe also played a key role in France's successful FIFA World Cup campaign in Russia in 2018, where they defeated Croatia in the final. The former Monaco forward finished as the joint-leading scorer in the tournament with four goals, along with compatriot Griezmann and a few other renowned players.

In the summer of 2022, when Mbappe was heavily linked with a move away from PSG, he rejected a lucrative offer from Real Madrid and instead signed a two-year extension with the Ligue 1 champions.

Mbappe's latest dig at PSG could suggest the young French forward is still not very comfortable at the Parc des Princes side, especially after his penalty row with Neymar at the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign. It has also been suggested Mbappe envies Neymar's influence in the dressing room.

In a recent interview, Mbappe admitted his relationship with Neymar was "sometimes colder and sometimes warmer."

"It is my sixth year with Neymar. We have always had a relationship like this, based on respect, sometimes colder and sometimes warmer. I have great respect for him and his influence on the team," said Mbappe, who has already netted 10 goals for PSG this season in nine matches.
