In one of the most awkward nationally televised verbal commitment announcements ever seen, Geismar (La.) Dutchtown High safety Landon Collins, live on ESPN, chose to play for the Alabama Crimson Tide next season...over the LSU Tigers.

Coincidentally, the five-star recruit's decision comes just three days before both Alabama and LSU do battle in the BCS title game. For Collins, choosing between those two powerhouses was a battle in it of itself.

I'm from New Orleans,'' said Collins in his announcement during the nationally-televised Under Armour High School All America game played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. It was a tough decision...very difficult. But I'm going with Roll Tide, Roll.''

According to the New-Orleans Times Picayune, Collins grew up in Algiers, New Orleans prior to his family's relocation to the Gonzales area following Hurricane Katrina. He was named Louisiana's Mr. Football on Jan. 1 after becoming the state's first player to earn Class 5A All-State recognition on both offense and defense. As a result, he became Louisiana's top senior prospect, and according to Rivals.com, the nation's number two safety and number 15 overall player.

Collins' mother, April Justin, most likely remembered all those details as she sat next to her son listening to his announcement because once he made it, she didn't seem too thrilled. All she could do was roll her eyes and put her hand on her head.

Soon after, when ESPN's own Dari Nowkhah asked for Justin's reaction, this is what she had to say:

I feel that LSU is the better place for him to be. LSU Tigers (are) No. 1. Go Tigers.''

Justin didn't seem too supportive, but Collins did seem content with his decision, highlighted by the end of the interview when he held up his hands in a diamond shape, displaying Alabama's logo.

It was a (big) decision for me and I felt home more (there),'' Collins said of Alabama. I just loved the coaches and the coaching staff and the players that I'm going to be playing with.''

All in all, Collins' commitment is only verbal. At the same time, you can bet that his mother will have something more to say about his decision leading up to national signing day.
