KEY POINTS

  • Barcelona can take advantage of Liverpool's interest in Ousmane Dembele
  • Barcelona needs enough cash for its bid to acquire Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez
  • Dembele has not lived up to his billing since joining Barca in 2017

Barcelona is having more reasons to chase Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez with Luis Suarez continuing to struggle in his return from injury. And with their bid for a La Liga title repeat placed in serious jeopardy, the Catalans are likely to consider some external help, possibly from Liverpool, which is said to be interested to sign Ousmane Dembele.

The biggest challenge for the Blaugrana is their lack of funds as Inter Milan reportedly offers Martinez for €85 million. Enter Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, whose desire to nab Dembele can be exploited by the Spanish giant.

According to Ranoveer Neogi of Everything Barca, Klopp, who used to manage Dembele at Borussia Dortmund, is still willing to acquire the French footballer anew despite the youngster building a rather dismal image at Camp Nou as being one of the worst signings in club history.

“Liverpool interest for Ousmane Dembele may be considered bizarre since the former Borussia Dortmund man has been one of the worst signings in the history of the Camp Nou. However, former Borussia Dortmund manager, Jurgen Klopp, believes that he could help the French forward find his feet once again,” Neogi wrote.

Dembele would be one of the highest valued talents in the upcoming transfer market, making a deal with Liverpool more feasible given Barcelona’s intention to have enough cash to seize Martinez from Inter Milan.

“Klopp values Ousmane Dembele highly and is willing to break the bank to sign Ousmane Dembele from Barca this summer. If Liverpool does snatch Dembele this summer for a hefty fee it would be a crucial role for the Catalan club this summer in the transfer market,” Neogi added.

“Dembele earns a rumored figure of around 12 million euros per year and has missed over 60 games due to injuries since 2017. The dismissal of Dembele would increase Barca’s transfer budget and wage budget which could then be used to sign Lautaro Martinez from Inter Milan instead.”

The 23-year-old reached a lucrative deal with Barcelona worth €105 million, a reported €40 million add-ons, and a buyout clause set at €400 million in 2017. He, however, has not lived up to his billing, scoring just a total of 19 goals in 74 appearances overall for Barca, which include a goal in five appearances in La Liga this season.
