  • Suarez's first stint in the Premier League was with Liverpool
  • He won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2014-15

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Atletico Madrid forward Luis Suarez ahead of the 2022 summer transfer window.

Apart from Aston Villa, two other clubs are chasing Suarez’s signatures -- Inter Milan and Sevilla -- reported Spanish outlet Fichajes.

Suarez is leaving Atletico after spending two seasons at Wanda Metropolitano, the La Liga club announced on Sunday.

After becoming FC Barcelona’s head coach in the summer of 2019, Ronald Koeman informed Suarez he was no longer needed at Camp Nou. Later on, the Uruguayan forward joined Atletico Madrid on a two-year contract.

The move turned out to be fruitful for the club as Suarez helped them win the La Liga title, their first league trophy since the 2013-14 season. Suarez finished the campaign with 21 goals in 38 competitive appearances for Atletico.

If Aston Villa manage to secure Suarez, it would see him reunite with his former Liverpool FC teammate Steven Gerrard, who is the Villa Park side’s current boss. Aston Villa also have Suarez and Gerrard’s former Liverpool teammate Philippe Coutinho.

Aston Villa is believed to be looking for a striker who would help them challenge for a place in the European competitions. There is no doubt that Suarez is more than able to lead an attack comprising playmakers such as Coutinho, Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings, Emiliano Buendía and Leon Bailey. With 44 points in 36 games, Aston Villa are currently 13th in the 2021-22 Premier League table.

Suarez, who has been playing competitive soccer for nearly two decades, has scored 450-plus goals. Across six seasons at Barcelona, where Suarez won the Champions League, he netted 198 goals in 283 matches. Suarez became a superstar during his stint at Liverpool, where he single-handedly won many matches for the Reds. In 132 appearances, Suarez scored 82 goals for the Anfield side.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan are also looking for a class striker in order to remain one of the strongest teams in Serie A. In the summer of 2020, Suarez was close to joining Juventus, but his move failed amid accusations that he cheated his way to obtain Italian citizenship.
