A 23-year-old man, who duped one of his girlfriends of $9,252 and used some of the money to pay for the abortion of another girlfriend he had impregnated, was arrested by police in the western Indian city of Mumbai on Friday.

Ashwin Pandey, whose divorce proceedings with his estranged wife are ongoing, befriended a 30-year-old woman — the complainant — a few months ago when they were working in the same company.

"Recently, the complainant had excelled in her career and joined an event management company as a manager. In a bid to impress the complainant, Pandey told her he had joined an airline as a security administrator," police said, local daily the Mid-Day reported.

He eventually won over her trust and started making up stories in order to seek monetary assistance from her.

"He allegedly cheated her of Rs 6.5 lakh ( $9,252) under the pretext of meeting his monthly expenditure and bearing the medical expenses of a close relative who was injured in a road accident,” police said.

However, the man was caught when the woman saw an “I love you” message on his phone. When confronted, he said a man was trying to get romantically involved with him. She, however, wasn’t convinced. She reached out to the sender of the message when he was not around.

"That woman told the complainant that Pandey had got her pregnant and the duo was recently in Delhi, where she underwent an abortion,” police said.

The complainant realized she had sent him the money during the same time after Pandey said he wanted it for a medical emergency. The man also had sexual relations with the complainant and promised to marry her.

The complainant filed a case of rape and cheating against Pandey on Friday after learning about the other woman. Pandey was arrested the same day and will remain in police custody until Wednesday.

In a similar incident in the Indian state of Meghalaya last year, a man duped his girlfriend of $3,558 by promising to marry her. The couple was in a live-in relationship for over six years. When their parents agreed to get them married, the man refused and got engaged to another woman.

The woman then filed a complaint against him stating that he duped her and withdrew money from her bank account in order to buy a bike. He had promised to marry her and also told her that he was buying the bike in order to pick and drop her from her workplace every day.

The complainant, in this case, was four months pregnant. The man was arrested after the complaint was filed, the Daily News 360 reported.
