In a disturbing incident in Malaysia, a father abandoned his two-year-old son who is suffering from Down syndrome by leaving him with his nanny for a year. The incident took place in a town called Pandamaran in Selangor state.

The nanny's husband, who was identified as Wong, told local media he and his wife contacted the child's father several times but he never came to take the boy back. According to local media World of Buzz, the boy’s father was a local from their town and was married to a Vietnamese woman. The couple got divorced and since then, the boy’s mother returned to Vietnam, leaving the child with the father.

“I told him he can’t leave the child in my house forever, at which point he promised he would take him home. After a while he stopped returning our calls, and never even called to ask about his son (Lee),” Wong reportedly said.

According to local media, Wong and his wife have been caring for the boy, who suffers from Down syndrome and asthma. However, after a year passed, they now threatened Lee's father and said they would send the child to an orphanage or welfare center if he refused to collect him.

However, Lee's father, who was not identified, started abusing Wong and demanded he and his wife continue taking care of his son. The father also allegedly said they should ensure his "son has a coffin prepared for him at the time of his death."

Local media Sinchew reported Wong and his wife were stressed and feeling pressured as they haven't received any payment from the father for taking care of Less for a year already. They were now struggling financially to care for the child.

Pandamaran lawmaker Leong Tuck Chee was notified about the case recently and he held a press conference Sunday in hopes to encourage the boy’s father to bring him home. Leong gave the father one week's time to contact the government to take back his son from his nanny.

Down syndrome is a congenital disorder arising from a chromosome defect. The disorder, which affects approximately one in every 700 babies born in the United States, causes intellectual impairment and physical abnormalities.
