  • Steve Kerr maximizes time during NBA hiatus
  • Kerr bares plans for Warriors top pick
  • Kerr insists their pick remains Bob Myers' call

Having to think about a high lottery pick is not a usual thing for Steve Kerr. The Golden State Warriors head coach led the Dubs to the NBA Finals five straight times from 2015 till 2019; hence, a high draft selection became unconventional for the Bay Area-based squad.

But now that the Warriors have hit rock bottom and on the verge of missing the playoffs for the first time under his helm, Kerr is now coerced to keep his eyes on top prospects as his team is most likely to pick early in the upcoming rookie draft.

"I watch probably two college games a day," Kerr said as he spoke with The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami on the TK Show. "A few hours in front of the TV watching some of the draft prospects and taking notes."

The 54-year-old is generous enough to share some of their plans for their top pick as he maximizes his time at home while on self-quarantine due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re excited about having a high pick and there definitely are some guys who are very talented,” Kerr said while he clarified that the decision remains to be the call of Warriors General Manager Bob Myers. "This, obviously, is Bob’s world. We're gonna pick who Bob and the scouts feel like we should pick.

"But what we have to weigh is -- are we looking for a player who is gonna help immediately because we feel like we've got this window the next few years? Are we gonna use the pick in a trade to try to trade for a vet who is ready to help us win right away?” Kerr added.

"Or do you look at it long term -- because you know you want to be good for the next decade -- and you take a young player with a lot of potential who's maybe not ready to help us win yet but you feel like could be a great player down the road?

"Those are all options and that's what we have to figure out as an organization."
