KEY POINTS

  • An Irving for Simmons trade is allegedly suggested by unnamed team officials
  • The Nets are unlikely to budge due to Irving’s proven track record
  • Simmons will perfectly fit in with Brooklyn's system if a trade pushes through

The Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers have issues that need addressing as the 2021-22 NBA season nears.

In the middle of those problems are two superstars–Ben Simmons and Kyrie Irving.

With the two NBA stars clearly singled out, an NBA trade suggestion has cropped up from Jake Fischer of the Bleacher Report.

According to Fischer, several unnamed team officials mentioned the possibility of seeing a trade involving Irving and Simmons. It appears to be a natural but hard-to-secure scenario even if it makes sense.

Irving has held a strong stance against getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Unless he gets the jab, the one-time NBA champion stands to miss home games for the Nets.

On the other end is Simmons, who has had enough of the Philadelphia 76ers. He is holding out, something that stemmed following their playoff exit last season.

Simmons wants to move to another team, but doing so is easier said than done due to the $147-million remaining balance in his contract.

Between Irving and Simmons, there is no question the former holds an obvious edge. He has been around the league for so long and is a legitimate NBA champion.

Hence, trading him at this point could make sense but hardly justifies a trade tied to his current stance on the COVID-19 vaccine.

However, adding Simmons also makes sense for the Nets and head coach Steve Nash. There is no doubt the 25-year-old would be a joy to watch in the open court if a deal would push through.

Should an NBA trade involving Irving and Simmons materialize, it also means giving up a well-rounded player in Irving.

Although the Nets have more than enough firepower, giving up Irving for Simmons may not entirely seem sound. He would be a godsend to the Sixers, a team in need of a proven court general.
