KEY POINTS

  • Ronda Rousey recaptured the SmackDown Women's Championship at Extreme Rules 2022
  • She reveals that thumbtacks were supposed to be part of the finish
  • WWE did great in building up both women despite the lack of blood

Ronda Rousey finds herself atop the SmackDown women's division after taking back her title from Liv Morgan in a brutal Extreme Rules match at the pay-per-view's namesake last Saturday, October 8.

But as "The Baddest Woman on the Planet" later revealed during her latest gaming stream, the finish to their match was going to be much more brutal to help it make a memorable match among fans.

"I pitched the finish to be thumbtacks. She put down thumbtacks, powerbombs me onto the thumbtacks... Liv would be fighting and trying not to tap and then pass out face down into the thumbtacks, having her hand there to protect her face," she said.

"They said we can't do thumbtacks anymore. Legally, we can't purposefully injure people and cut their skin. I was like, 'How about tiny maple leaf pins?' 'No.' 'How about a punch of screws on their side?' 'No.'"

Based on Rousey's statements, WWE stuck with creating a brutal match that did not need to draw blood from either side–a testament to them wanting to keep their PG-13 rating.

Rousey and Morgan were able to put on a solid match despite the lack of blood.

A notable moment from the match was Rousey nailing the underdog champion with a baseball bat to her ribs which looked extremely gnarly on TV and left a bruise on Morgan.

Morgan later returned the favor when she placed Rousey atop a table and went for a senton from the top rope–similar to her leap of faith on the September 23 episode of SmackDown.

The finish was simple but effective in possibly concluding Rousey and Morgan's affiliation with each other in the meantime.

Rousey locked in a submission on Morgan before switching to a choke that saw the champion being crushed by Rousey's legs, with the referee calling it off since Morgan was not responding.

Credit should go to the producers of this match since it reestablished Rousey as a force to be reckoned with while giving Morgan the credibility she needed in not tapping out.

With a brutal heel reigning atop the SmackDown women's division, which babyface WWE puts her in a program with next will be something to watch out for.

All in all, WWE provided pro wrestling fans with a great night of action with the Extreme Rules event thanks to a solidly built card that was topped off by the goosebumps-inducing return of Bray Wyatt to close the show.

WWE's next events are Crown Jewel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and the long-awaited debut of WarGames match on the main roster at Survivor Series on November 5 and 26 respectively.
