Peanut butter recall
Inspired Organics has issued a recall of its Almond, Peanut, and Tahini butters because of a possible Listeria contamination. Donated peanut butter is set aside to be crosschecked with lists of recalled brands before being repackaged for distribution at the Care and Share Food Bank on February 24, 2009 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The food bank has had to pull and destroy many jars of peanut butter because of the recent salmonella contanimation of some brands. The food bank supplies local aid agencies with bulk quantities of food which is then distributed to the growing number of needy residents of southern Colorado. The new stimulus package is expected to double the amount of food the U.S. government will send to the food bank later next month as part of expanded Emergency Food Assistance Program. Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly adults as well as others with a weakened immune system. Most individuals suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

Oskri Corporation is the manufacturer of Inspired Organics’ nut and seed butters . The company is working in partnership with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to identify the cause of the possible contamination.
