Climate activists are pushing President Joe Biden to do more on climate change as they gathered Monday for a protest outside the White House. The protesters carried signs saying “Biden you coward fight for us” and “no climate no deal.”

Protesters complained that Biden ran on bold promises and so far he has failed to deliver on them. Among the protesters were the Sunrise Movement and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

The activists say that they did everything in their power to help Biden get elected and he is letting his political capital slip away as he negotiates with Republicans. They also cited the Democrats' increased leverage on Capitol Hill.

The protests come as a record heatwave that is ravaging the Pacific Northwest that experts say only happens once every millennium.

When asked about the climate protests, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said “the president is absolutely committed to addressing climate.”

Many of the activists are critical of the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure plan that includes half the funding Biden initially proposed for electric vehicle technology such as charging stations. The White House says the bipartisan agreement is “a downpayment” on Biden’s long-term goals for addressing climate change.

Maintaining support from young progressive voters is critical for Biden. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Ocasio-Cortez were considered instrumental in helping the former vice-president win in 2020.

More than half of voters ages 18-29 voted in the 2020 election, with 60% of them voting Democrat.
