A romantic gesture gone wrong: it is what happened to a woman 21-year-old woman that was eager to please his boyfriend during his birthday.

Three years ago, Lucy Edwards rented an AirBnB room to surprise his beau on his special day. She prepared candles and a lot of sweet stuff when the unfortunate incident happened.

Edwards said that she "was just trying to make the bedroom feel romantic," adding that "candles are... an easy way of doing that." Suddenly, out of nowhere, the pillows caught fire, and the couple was scrambling out of the room.

In the ensuing chaos, the pillow accidentally landed on Lucy's face, burning her eyelid, cheek, lip and nose. When her boyfriend, Tom, saw what had happened on what was supposed to be a sweet evening, he "passed out on the floor."

Edwards, a hairdresser from Oxford, said that she felt that the pillow's burnt material stuck to her skin when the couple bumped to each other during the fracas. Tom, at the time, began hyperventilating at sight; eventually, the pair made it to Tom's dad, a two-hour drive from where the unfortunate incident happened.

Later in the night, Edwards just applied cream and went to bed. Two days after the bizarre event, the burns became infected, and she had to go to the hospital for treatment. The medical staff was able to clean the infected wounds and Lucy's skin began healing.

Edwards told SWNS that she was sent home with "antibiotics for the worst of the skin, incredibly strong painkillers and a skincare regime."

She added that it took multiple days in and out of the hospital to get cleared. The couple is still together and said that they can now "look back and laugh" on the incident.

Edwards wounds healed without further complications; she said that the experience had given her a "funny story" to tell her clients in the salon.
